Alternative Transportation
Mobility without sacrificing our collective futures is what we are really talking about. So accustomed are we to hopping in a car (or nowadays a Sport Utility Vehicle) and driving, that we find it hard to imagine that there could be another, perhaps better, way to get someplace. Here we look at many of the options available today.
When Will the Joy Ride End?
This article points out many of the sad truths about our addiction to the
automobile and petroleum. It is actually a rather succinct summary of a longer
publication which examines the issues in great detail.
Advanced Cars
All sorts of new vehicles are on the drawing board, with a few of them
actually showing up in dealers' showrooms and on the street. REW! has
an electric S-10 pickup for local errands and we are shopping for a VW
turbo-diesel that we can run on used fryer grease for longer trips.
Bikes, Motorbikes &
Hybrids
Fun and energy efficiency go hand in hand with two wheeled vehicles. Here
we examine several approaches from practical day-to-day bikes to ultra light,
aerodynamic pedal/electric future bikes.
Solar Boats
Imagine cruising along the canals or around the fingerlakes in a sleek, silent,
solar powered catamaran. This beauty is available for your cruising pleasure.
Solar RVs/Campers
RV Power kits give you the freedom to escape from crowded campgrounds and
noisy generators with you own independent power source fueled by the sun.
Planes
Solar Planes? Check out the latest, think about where the Wright Brothers
were not-to-long-ago, and imagine where we might be a few years from now!
Mass Transit
Flexible forms of efficient mass transit are sadly missing in much of America.
Having enjoyed the freedom of "mobility without a car" while living in Europe
I know what is possible and wonder why we don't make it happen here.
Walking
OK - we may be going a little far here. But as a last resort, this old fashioned
means of transportation can sometimes be used. Some people even say its good
for you.
Electric Lawn Mowers/Tractors
Not exactly "Transportation", but the EPA is supposed to be cracking
down on polluting and other off-road engines - so 'til we find a better
place on our site...
