BioDiesel
Making carbon-neutral transportation fuel is a big step toward sustainability. While diesel engines are not prefect, the new TDI engines are a great step forward, and BioDiesel makes them even better. Read the book and start cooking! PS I started making my own BD in 2003 and have been using it in my 1996 VW Passat Wagon - burns smoother than the dinodiesel and smells much better too. And yes, it costs much less too (if you don't count my time).
The
Book!
New Third Edition! From the Fryer to the Fuel Tank: The
Complete Guide to Using Vegetable Oil as an Alternative Fuel gives complete
instructions, photos, diagrams, parts lists, and resources for making biodiesel
from used cooking oil, running a Diesel engine on straight vegetable oil,
building a small scale biodiesel processor, growing and processing oilseed
crops, and modifying Diesel engines for operation in cold weather.
Fuel Sipping VW TDIs
Volkswagen makes a great "Turbo Direct Injection" Diesel engine. Available
in the States in the New Beetle, Golf and Jetta (and formerly in the Passat)
this fuel sipping engine lists at 49 mpg highway on the EPA charts. In Europe,
you also have the choice of an even more efficient model. Check out this
